Economic Justice

Our faith-rooted advocacy for economic justice is grounded in our religious beliefs and traditions, all of which call for a more equitable economic system. We emphasize the inherent dignity of all people and the importance of the common good, where everyone has access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive. Ultimately, economic justice is a critical path to reducing poverty.

These principles are rooted in religious teachings emphasizing the importance of caring for the vulnerable, sharing resources, and promoting justice. For example, the Jewish and Christian scriptures speak of the importance of just wages (Deuteronomy 24:14-15) and caring for the poor and marginalized (Proverbs 14:31).

In California, faith-rooted economic justice is aligned with several key public policies:

  • Basic Income: Improving family stability and outcomes by providing the funds needed to live above the poverty line.
  • Living Wages: Advocating for wages that are high enough to meet basic needs like food, housing, and healthcare, allowing individuals and families to live with dignity.
  • Worker Protections: Supporting policies that protect workers from exploitation and discrimination, such as paid sick leave, family leave, and workplace safety regulations.

Of course, the Multi-Faith ACTION Coalition also emphasizes adequate and affordable housing, universal healthcare access, and food security.

Here in Contra Costa County, Measure X is an example of a public policy designed, affirmed by the voters, and implemented to address some of the most basic needs of our neighbors. The original goals for the ½ cent sales tax included:

  • Keeping Contra Costa’s regional hospital open and staffed;
  • Funding community health centers and emergency response;
  • Supporting crucial safety-net services;
    Investing in early childhood services;
  • Protecting vulnerable populations; and
  • Providing for other essential county services.

The Multi-Faith ACTION Coalition has actively supported Measure X since its inception.

By combining spiritual principles with advocacy and action, faith-rooted economic justice seeks to create a more just and equitable society for all.
