June 2025 - the State Budget
We need to advocate today for a faith-rooted budget: a moral budget
In late May, Governor Newsom proposed deep cuts across health care, education, and social programs to close the $12 billion deficit.
Legislators proposed a different strategy, relying heavily on borrowing from other state funds rather than making such extensive cuts. They asserted that balancing the budget should not come at the expense of “California’s most vulnerable.”
We agree – we believe the budget should be balanced without burdening the most vulnerable. The legislature passed a “preliminary” budget on June 13th to comply with state law, and leaders are now “negotiating” with the governor.

Governor! Don't cut healthcare and services!

Gov Newsom is undermining Health4All by proposing to freeze undocumented immigrants from enrolling in Medi-Cal in 2026. He also proposes to impose a $100/mo premium on undocumented adults in 2027 and to cut in-home supportive services, long-term care, and full-scope dental benefits.
We can do better than that in California. These are our neighbors! Please call or send him a message opposing this! Keep Health4All intact.
Call Gov Newsom’s office
Phone number: 916-445-2841
Call Script: “My name is [NAME], and I live in [Contra Costa] County. I’m part of [faith community/organization/coalition]. We are incredibly disappointed with the Governor’s proposal to enact deep cuts across healthcare, education, and social programs. He is taking back his commitment to Health4All and immigrant health. At a time when immigrants, the elderly, and the poorest are really struggling, California must support them. I strongly oppose cuts to Medi-Cal that would unjustly exclude undocumented Californians. I support the legislative budget proposal. Thank you.”

Gov Newsom, I am opposed to your proposal to freeze Medi-Cal enrollment for undocumented adults in 2026.
I believe you can find a way to balance the budget without burdening the most vulnerable.
Reducing healthcare and support services for the vulnerable isn’t a good policy. These are our neighbors!
We can do better than this. Please find a way!

Send the legislative leaders a message
Legislative leaders Mike McGuire (Senate President Pro Tem) and Robert Rivas (Speaker of the Assembly) are taking a different approach: borrowing from other state funds rather than making deep cuts. But they still propose cuts to services.
We believe our state elected officials should find a way to balance the budget without burdening the most vulnerable.
Use the action item below to send them a message.
Find and contact your elected representatives
The California Legislature is correct to borrow from other state funds rather than make deep cuts to support for our most vulnerable neighbors.
But they still propose cuts to services that go too far.

Pending State Legislation
There are many bills pending in the legislature which we endorse.
All of the items below have been passed in their “house of origin” – either the Assembly or the Senate. They need to pass in the other house to be presented to the governor for signature. Lawmakers need to hear from us.
These bills will address poverty in California, including housing and shelter, racial justice, and equity.
