Dear Friends: We have been called to speak out when we see injustice. That time is here. The Governor and California Legislature are deliberating the state budget and many bills that will help the poor and right injustices. The Multi-faith ACTION Coalition has carefully reviewed many of these proposals and one that we support needs you to call your Senator today.
Reflecting on the many faith teachings that command we shall not make unjust laws, deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed, the Multi-faith ACTION Coalition supports SB 1392 by Senator Holly Mitchell, also called Repeal Ineffective Sentencing Enhancements Act (RISE 2018).
California now has the regrettable distinction of meting out some of the longest sentences in the nation, driven largely by sentencing enhancements for prior convictions. The California prison system remains under Federal oversight for overcrowded conditions. The ongoing prison overcrowding litigation indicates that prison capacity and related issues concerning conditions of confinement remain unresolved.
SB 1392 repeals the one-year sentence enhancement for each prior prison or county jail felony term that applies to a defendant sentenced on a new felony. This punishment has failed to protect communities or reduce crime, but has resulted in overcrowded jails and prisons and harsh punishments. By repealing this ineffective, harmful, and costly punishment, the state will also free up funds to invest in community programs that actually improve the quality of life and reduce crime.
Flood the Phones! SB 1392 will be called for a vote this week. Senator Nancy Skinner who represents Richmond and other West County cities is a co-sponsor of the bill, so if you live in her district, please thank her.
Call TODAY and ask others to join you. Urge these Senators to support the RISE Act of 2018 (SB 1392):
Sen. Glazer (Most of Contra Costa County) (916) 651-4007
Sen. Dodd (Martinez and Pleasant Hill in CCC) (916) 651-4003
Script: My name is _____, and I live in ________ California.
As person of faith and the Multi-faith ACTION Coalition, calling to say that I support Senate Bill 1392, related to sentence enhancements for prior convictions. California wastes too much money by locking people up for very long periods of time, when it should be investing in services we need in our communities. We want fairness in our courts. Please let Senator _________ know that I strongly support this bill.
