Last Friday ended the CA Legislative session and SB 1393 passed! SB 1393 will restore judicial discretion and eliminate one of the most commonly used sentencing enhancements, the nickel prior. This is when a person is given 5 additional years to their sentence because they have a prior conviction. It is wrong to maintain a system that sentences people for past mistakes and forbids judges from tailoring a sentence to an individual’s case and culpability.
The Multi-faith ACTION Coalition and other justice advocates reached out to Assembly member Tim Grayson about SB 1393 and we are happy to report that he voted with the majority to pass the bill. Thank you, Assm. Grayson!!
Now, we need Governor Brown to sign SB1393 into law! Here are a few things that you can do to let him know that you want this bill to become law.
